I'd aggree, i wouldn't attempt to get a gun where the RS was made around 1870, or even a little before without expecting to prove my defence. I'm sure you mean 1800s dates rather than 1900 dates there. Personally I'd rather give the evidence than take it to court and argue its from before 1870 based on contemporary revolvers of the time. The problem with the SAA is its model number according to the US army is "1973" so its generally thought of by Customs as being verboten under the VCRA, so they'll ask for evidence of a defence. Then a man called Daniel Wesson talked to White and they made a deal that gave Wesson and his partner Horace Smith exclusive licence to produce bored through cylinder firearms until April 1969- even legally baring colt from beginning design and research work on the cylinder until then, which is why the SAA didn't go into full production until 1973 when it was adopted by the army, although there are a few colt made pieces from before 1969 with bore through cylinder and cartridge hammers fitted after 1969 used in the development of the SAA, also some customised/converted by small gunsmiths from before the patent expired, though these were technically illegal. The S.A.A.'s "type and design"-to use the wording in the VCRA- originates around about 1855, with a patent filed by Rollin White who used to work for Colt, when White took the idea to his old boss, Samuel Colt passed because he liked cap and ball. It seems places online are saying they are exempt and allowing them to be sold but we know how reliable the internet is. Would I be right in thinking this includes S.A.As? I know they started being in service in 1873 but they were designed prior to 1870. ![]()
